Shortly after the department’s inception, the MFA Art Writing program at the School of Visual Arts first established its online publication Degree Critical, edited by Raphael Rubenstein. Its initial postings consisted of a handful of exceptional pieces of writing by the department’s first graduating class, who earned their degrees that same year. Over time Degree Critical has grown to encompass writing by first- and second-year students, department faculty, and alumni, making it an unparalleled space on the Internet for perceptive and relevant critical writing.
As the journal moves into its second decade, we’re rejuvenating the digital pages of Degree Critical, and re-launching it as a unique website. While still affiliated with SVA and the MFA Art Writing department, we hope Degree Critical will draw in a wider, even more diverse readership. To that end, we look forward to engaging with you by way of more frequent and consistent postings, contributions by writers both within and outside of the Art Writing program community, and the introduction of our podcast Writing Art – coming very soon. We hope you’ll visit often, and subscribe to our newsletter below so you will never miss our latest content.
I’m truly excited to be at the helm of Degree Critical as Editor-in-Chief as it undergoes this exciting transformation, and as we strive to make it a must-read for intelligent, challenging, and thought-provoking criticism.
Welcome to the new Degree Critical.
