The MFA program in Art Writing at the School of Visual Arts in New York was established in 2007 for writers who wished to focus on visual arts and criticism as a place to hone this specialized craft. As the online journal of the department, Degree Critical seeks to underscore and perpetuate this goal.
Degree Critical solicits writing on the visual arts from writers across the spectrum of race, gender, and nationality. We encourage progressive and creative work that both informs the reader and challenges the status quo. We share with the MFA program in Art Writing the fundamental tenet that the heart of our practice is located in “criticism writ large, aspiring to literature.”
We publish new content once per week, on Fridays, and encourage submissions from current students, alumni, and faculty of the MFA program in Art Writing, as well as from writers outside this community. For submission guidelines, click here.
